Possible Postal Strike
Friday July 11, 2003
CUPW, the union representing the postal workers in Canada, has given notice that their 48,000 members may strike as soon as Friday July 18. In a press release CUPW says they hope to settle in the next week, but issues that still have to be resolved are workload and injury rates, benefit cutbacks, severance pay removal, wages and cost of living allowance.
The response from Canada Post is that it's a union pressure tactic and they're confident a settlement will be negotiated.
With all our electronic services, postal strikes aren't quite as numbing as they used to be, and the middle of summer is as convenient a time as any for most of us. Both sides have agreed to continue delivering government pension and social assistance cheques during a strike.
