Manitoba - the Heart of Canada
Tuesday July 15, 2003
Manitoba joined Confederation 133 years ago, becoming Canada's fifth province on July 15, 1870. In 1870 Manitoba covered little more than the Red River Valley. The province now has a total area of 647,797 sq. km., about 6.5 percent of the total area of Canada. Now one of three Canadian prairie provinces, Manitoba has a diversified economy, led by manufacturing, then agriculture, hydroelectricity and mining.
