CRTC Orders Split of High-Speed Internet and Home Phone Services
Monday July 21, 2003
The CRTC, the Canadian telecommunications regulator, has ordered large Canadian telephone companies to offer their high-speed Internet access to customers of competitors.
Until now, telephone companies Bell Canada, Aliant, SaskTel and TELUS have been offering high-speed Internet access only to their own residential phone customers.
The CRTC decision will make it possible for customers to get residential phone service from a new telephone company and still get high-speed Internet access from one of the larger established companies. In a press release, CRTC Chairman Charles Dalfen says it's all about "removing the obstacles to fair competition."
