Car Anti-Theft Devices
Tuesday July 29, 2003
Starting in 2005, new vehicles in Canada will be required to have anti-theft immobilization devices. Transport Canada says that about 80 percent of new vehicles are already equipped with the devices. More than 160,000 motor vehicles were reported stolen in Canada in 2002.
The immobilizer is an electronic security device integrated into the vehicle’s circuitry and engine management system. When activated, the immobilizer shuts off one or more parts of the engine's electrical system - the starter, ignition or fuel system. A special key or keypad is needed to start the vehicle's engine.
