Canadians Smoking Less
Wednesday July 30, 2003
A twice-yearly survey of over 20,000 Canadians shows that smoking continues to decline in Canada. Results from the 2002 Canadian Tobacco Use Monitoring Survey show that 5.4 million Canadians, or about 21 percent of the population 15 years old and over, were smokers.
That's down from the 2001 rate of 22 percent, and well on the way to the federal government's target of 20 percent by 2011.
Still, more than 45,000 Canadians die each year of tobacco related disease. If you're ready to set your own personal target, then try these Canadian resources to help you quit smoking now.
