Raining in Kelowna
Monday September 8, 2003
It started raining this morning in Kelowna, British Columbia, bringing some relief to a city in the midst of the Okanagan Mountain fire.
Five millimetres (0.2 inches) of rain is expected today and the Environment Canada forecast calls for cooler weather and showers for the rest of the week. The rain won't put out the fire, but it does bring relief for firefighters who have been battling the blaze since August 16.
The region has only had two millimetres (0.08 inches) of rain since January and layers deep in the forest floor are still critically dry.
About 240 homes have been lost in the Okanagan Mountain fire and more than a third of Kelowna residents have been evacuated at one point or another, some more than once. About 4200 Kelowna residents remain out of their homes and thousands more are on evacuation alert.
