Conservatives Sweep PEI Election

Tuesday September 30, 2003
With the power still out in many places from Hurricane Juan blowing through PEI on Sunday night, an amazing 83 percent of eligible voters turned out to vote the Conservatives back into power in Monday's provincial election.

The election win for the Conservatives gives Premier Pat Binns and his party a third straight majority government, something that hasn't been done in Prince Edward Island since the 1880s.

Robert Ghiz, the new Liberal Party leader, and son of the late Premier Joe Ghiz, won his seat in Charlottetown-Rochford Square and brought the party total from one in the last election to four this time round. The other Liberal winners were:
  • Richard Brown - Charlottetown-Kings Square
  • Ron MacKinley - North River-Rice Point
  • Carolyn Bertram - Crapaud-Hazel Grove
Gary Robichaud and the NDP were shut out.
