Alberta to Open Washington Office
Wednesday February 18, 2004
The Alberta government plans to open an office in Washington to improve its ties with the United States. In the Speech from the Throne opening the new session of the legislature, the government said it will use the office to advance the province’s economic and policy interests and to help expand Alberta’s contacts with top U.S. decision-makers.
Canadian Press reports that it will be more a political office than a trade office. The biggest issue right now is the BSE crisis, but Alberta wants to be on hand to lobby the U.S. government on a variety of issues. The office is expected to open in about six months. Alberta will be the only Canadian province with an office in Washington.
