RCMP Charges George Radwanski
Wednesday March 15, 2006
The RCMP has charged George Radwanski, the Privacy Commissioner of Canada from 2000 to 2003, with fraud and breach of trust after an investigation into allegations made in a 2003 audit by the Office of the Auditor General of Canada. Arthur Lamarche, the former chief of staff in the Office of the Privacy Commissioner was also charged. Both men are scheduled to appear in Ottawa Provincial Court on April 20, 2006.
George Radwanski was an active advocate for the privacy rights of Canadians, but he ran into trouble when a report by the Auditor General of Canada in 2003 found that there had been serious mismanagement and abuses of power in the operations of his office. His problems were further compounded when a parliamentary committee examining the financial management practices of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner found that Radwanski was "misleading" them. Although he denied ever intentionally misleading the committee, George Radwanski resigned.
