Support for Ralph Klein Crashes
Sunday April 2, 2006
Both Premier Ralph Klein and the Alberta Progressive Conservative Party were shocked by the results of the vote on Klein's leadership on Friday night. In earlier leadership reviews the percentage support for Klein was in the high 90s. This time his approval rating was just 55 percent.
Before the leadership vote, Klein had said that he planned to retire on October 31, 2007. As he takes a few days to consider his options, it looks like his personal timetable will have to be advanced.
Another surprise at the weekend's convention was the interest shown by Preston Manning in the job of Alberta Premier. The head of the former federal Reform Party should know what it takes to be Alberta Premier. After all, his father Ernest Manning held the post for 25 years.
