Flu Vaccine Delayed for 2006-07 Season
Sunday September 17, 2006
The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that the flu vaccine for this season's flu shots will not be available for all provinces and jurisdictions until the end of October or early November, about a month later than usual. The delivery of public flu shot programs will be condensed into a shorter timeframe this year, but will still be in time for the peak of flu season around mid-December.
Manufacturers of the flu vaccine were delayed in getting the appropriate seed strain for the A/Wisconsin strain, one of the virus strains recommended by the World Health Organization for this year's flu vaccine. The strain took longer to produce than normal and test kits were also delayed. The Public Health Agency is working with provinces and territories to make sure the flu vaccine is available as needed.
