Liberals Win New Brunswick Election

Wednesday September 20, 2006
Shawn Graham led the Liberal Party to victory in the New Brunswick provincial election September 18, 2006, and will become New Brunswick's next premier. In a low-key and cautious election campaign, New Brunswick voters were not convinced by claims from Progressive Conservative Premier Bernard Lord that his close ties with Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the federal Conservatives would give the province an advantage. The NDP did not win any seats.

Liberal campaign promises included:
  • cut gasoline taxes by 3.8 cents
  • provide a bursary of $2,000 for first-year university students
  • not include the assets of seniors in calculating nursing-home fees
  • start cleanup of St. John Harbour
  • improve job creation efforts
  • bring New Brunswickers back home
