Billion-Dollar Border Guards
Sunday November 5, 2006
Canadian Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day says it could cost $1 billion over the next decade to hire more guards to man the Canadian border, arm all Canadian guards at land border crossings and give them arms training. Stockwell Day confirmed the "preliminary spending plans" in an interview with The Canadian Press after a parliamentary committee started hearing about some of the costs. Arming Canadian border guards is a Conservative election promise. The guns will be for self-defence, not for firing on fleeing vehicles. U.S. guards at the border are armed.
