Upgraded Canadian $5 Bill Goes Into Circulation
Sunday November 19, 2006
An upgraded Canadian $5 bill was put into circulation on November 15. It should take a few weeks for the new bills to spread across the country. The $5 bill is the last in the Canadian Journey series of bank notes to get improved security features, making them harder to counterfeit and easier to verify. The security measures appear to be paying off. Statistics compiled by the RCMP show that the number of counterfeit bank notes passed and seized went down from 648,323 in 2004 to 422,447 in 2005. The value of counterfeit bank notes passed and seized also went down from $15.7 million in 2004 to $10.1 million in 2005.
