Liberals Take Prince Edward Island
Wednesday May 30, 2007
Robert Ghiz, the son of former PEI Premier Joe Ghiz, has turned PEI on its head. The PEI Liberal leader led his party to a massive victory in yesterday's provincial election, soundly defeating the Progressive Conservative government of longtime PEI Premier Pat Binns. The Liberals took 23 of the 27 seats in the province.
During the campaign the Liberals promised to increase the number of doctors in the province, increase spending on education, lower taxes including cutting 4.4 cents a litre off the tax on gasoline, and freeze property tax assessments. They also promised a balanced budget.
Robert Ghiz will be sworn in as Prince Edward Island's new premier on June 13.
