Newfoundland Goes to the Polls
Sunday October 7, 2007
Newfoundlanders head to the polls in a provincial general election on Tuesday October 9, 2007. Given the enormous popularity of Premier Danny Williams, there is not much doubt it will result in another Progressive Conservative majority. Labrador seems to be the one area where seats may be up for grabs. Many in Labrador feel that Williams is taking advantage of the area's huge mining and hydro-electric resources but not providing anything equivalent in the way of services. Parts of Labrador still lack access to health-care facilities, or even running water or paved roads.
In spite of a spending scandal that has affected all parties in the provincial house of assembly for more than a year, the one issue that seemed to raise some controversy in this election was Premier Williams' proposal to pay $1000 for every baby born or adopted in the province to help slow the decline in Newfoundland's population. Surprisingly, the baby bonus proposal did not spark much discussion about immigration, another method of increasing population growth.
At dissolution of the House of Assembly, the standings in the 48-seat legislature were: Progressive Conservatives with 34 seats, the Liberals with 11 and the NDP with one. There were two vacancies.
