New Government in Saskatchewan

Thursday November 8, 2007
Saskatchewan voters looking for a change have elected a new government. In the November 7 election, Brad Wall and the right-leaning Saskatchewan Party defeated Lorne Calvert and the NDP. The NDP have been in power for 16 years and the Saskatchewan Party has been a political party for just 10 years.

In the 2007 election, the Saskatchewan Party moved beyond its traditional rural ridings and captured urban seats. They convinced voters that they would be the best ones to handle Saskatchewan during boom times. As well as their pro-business policies, they indicated they would work on reducing health care wait times and crime rates, and on keeping people in Saskatchewan.

The Saskatchewan Party's most immediate challenges will be their plans to rework the province's labour laws and to have an independent board called Enterprise Saskatchewan take over economic development for the province.

The election of the Saskatchewan Party means that the only NDP government in Canada right now is in Manitoba, led by Manitoba Premier Gary Doer.
