A New Immigration Class for Canadian Experience

Tuesday August 26, 2008
The Canadian federal government is introducing a new immigration class for some temporary foreign workers and international student graduates who have Canadian work experience. Unlike other classes of Canadian immigration, the Canadian Experience Class will consider the immigration applicant's Canadian work experience as a key factor in the immigration selection process.

This new class will take into account the applicant's experience with Canadian society and knowledge of the Canadian labour market, as well as his or her language skills, in a way that the Skilled Worker Class, which was designed for workers applying from overseas, cannot. The Canadian Experience Class will have the additional benefit of spreading the benefits of immigration to more parts of Canada, since temporary foreign workers and international students are located more broadly across Canada because of employer demand or the attraction of a specific college or university. The new class could also allow more skilled tradespersons to immigrate permanently to Canada, since they often lack enough formal education to qualify under the federal Skilled Worker Program.

To apply under the Canadian Experience Class, temporary foreign workers and international student graduates will have to have Canadian managerial, professional, technical or trade work experience. The applicants will also be required to demonstrate either basic or moderate language skills, depending on their occupational skill level. Individuals applying for permanent residence through this new immigration class will be able to apply from within Canada while continuing to work.

It is a bit shortsighted, this plan. The Canadian Experience class is an internal remedy set to appease peeved employers. It does not address the insurmountable hurdles getting into Canada. It harps an old and familiar theme: “How do I get work experience in you do not hire me?”

I agree with the writer above. It is so difficult, my husband is an experienced trade man in his field, he have written the numerous companies but no one wants to go through the hassle of sponsoring. They said it is too long and drawn out.
