MPs Go the Extra Mile

Sunday April 5, 2009
If you're tired of listening to members of parliament squabble during Question Period or Commons Committees, then this story's for you.

On their way home from Parliament one evening last week, a pair of Nova Scotia MPs came across a beaver stranded in the middle of a downtown Ottawa street. The Ottawa Citizen reports that the MPs first called 911 to get some help, but were told that they'd have to get animal control for rodent retrieval. Figuring that a car would hit the creature before that could happen, the two took matters into their own hands. With the aid of a stick, Mark Eyking, MP for Sydney-Victoria, started herding the large beaver through the city streets towards the Ottawa river, while Rodger Cuzner, MP for Cape Breton-Canso, handled traffic. They managed to get the animal across the busy intersection of Bay and Wellington, around the back of the National Archives, and down the bank into the river safely.

It's nice to have our MPs looking out for our national symbols.

Such remarkable stick-handling along Ottawa’s busy streets! Were they really trying to rescue the beaver or simply displaying why they feel that such a display would surely prompt the Senators to sign them up?
