It's taken a while for his appointment to finally get through the U.S. political process, but David Jacobson has been sworn in as the new U.S. Ambassador to Canada and should be arriving in Ottawa to present his credentials by the end of the week. Jacobsen is a Chicago litigator who was a top fundraiser for President Barack Obama during the election campaign. He has been working in the White House as a special assistant helping fill the many other vacant administration jobs.
The delay didn't have anything to do with Canada. It was a political tussle between Democratic Senator Chris Dodd and Jacobson over another appointment that caused the hold-up.
There will be a long list of issues for Jacobson to deal with as he starts his new job. Economic recovery, border management, Afghanistan, energy and U.S. protectionism are just a few.
