Jean Chretien, Prime Minister of Canada from 1993 to 2003, is recovering from successful brain surgery at a Montreal hospital today. He underwent emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma, a collection of blood between the skull and the brain, on Friday afternoon at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital.
At a press conference Saturday, neurosurgeon Dr. Jeff Golan said that while the former prime minister had hit his head in his basement at the end of June, he showed few symptoms but was having some weakness in his left leg. A CT scan, however, showed a subdural hematoma of about three centimetres (1.2 in) on the right-hand side of the brain (Chretien's non-dominant side). The brain surgery took about two hours, and Chretien is expected to be kept under observation in hospital for a few days.
