Canadians like to gripe about Canada Post, but the Write to Santa program brings some smiles. The program, operated by current and retired volunteer Canada Post employees donating more than 200,000 hours of time every year, reached a milestone in December 2011, with 20 million replies sent since the program began in 1982. Write to Santa supports literacy by encouraging children to write and read letters, and it also promotes correct addressing.
Although the letters are private and special, and the focus of most replies is the wish list, Canada Post has released Santa's answers to a few of the most frequently asked questions.
- Q. What's your favorite cookie? A."My favorite cookie is a sugar cookie, but I love them all."
- Q. How do you go to all those houses in one night?
A."It's the magic of Christmas!" - Q.How do reindeers fly?
A."It's the special food I feed them. Carrots and other treats from boys and girls help keep them going on Christmas Eve."
And my favorite reply:
- Q. How many elves work for you?
A."9,876"
I hope your holidays were special too.
