bilingualism

Definition: Bilingualism means the ability to speak two languages. In Canada the term bilingualism usually refers to the ability to speak both English and French, the two official languages of Canada, and to Canadian federal government policies to encourage the use of the two official languages in Canadian society.

The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages in Canada is responsible for ensuring that federal bilingualism policies are followed and promoted.
