By , About.com Guide

Definition: Cabinet is the executive of government. In the Canadian federal government, the cabinet is made up of the prime minister and members of parliament, and sometimes senators, chosen by the prime minister. Each member of cabinet is assigned a portfolio of responsibilities, usually the subject matter of a government department, such as environment. Cabinets in the Canadian provincial and territory governments are similar, except that cabinet ministers are chosen by the premier from members of the legislative assembly.

The cabinet is responsible for the administration of government and the establishment of government policy.
Also Known As: In provincial and territory governments, the cabinet may be called the executive council.
