riding association - constituency association

By Susan Munroe, About.com

Definition: In Canada, a riding association is an association of members of a political party in a riding or electoral district.

Riding associations of registered political parties can register with the Chief Electoral Officer of Canada. An application to register as a riding association must by signed by the leader of the political party.

Riding associations do not have to be registered, but if they are they can
  • accept contributions

  • provide goods or funds or transfer them to a candidate endorsed by the political party, to the party, or to a registered association of the party

  • accept surplus campaign funds from a candidate, leadership contestant or nomination contestant.
A registered political party can have only one registered riding association for each electoral district.
