Definition: The premier of a province or territory in Canada is the leader of the provincial or territorial political party which elects the most members to the provincial or territorial legislative assembly or which has the support of a majority in the legislative assembly.

The premier is the head of government in the province or territory and selects members of cabinet, which is also called the executive council. As head of the executive council, the premier is the chief minister or first minister.
