About Joe Handley:

A former finance minister, Joe Handley was acclaimed both in his riding of Weledeh and as Premier of the Northwest Territories in the 2003 election. In accepting his acclamation as Premier, Joe Handley said it is time that northerners started to see some social benefits from the resources boom in the Northwest Territories, and promised to renew the fight with the federal government for control over northern resources and revenue.

  • Deputy Minister of several Northwest Territories government departments including Education, Renewable Resources, and Transportation

Political Career of Joe Handley:

  • Joe Handley was first elected to the Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly in 1999.

  • He was appointed Minister of Finance, Chairman of the Financial Management Board and Minister Responsible for the Workers Compensation Board in 2000.

  • Joe Handley was appointed Minister of Transportation and Minister Responsible for the NWT Power Corporation in 2001.

  • Joe Handley was also Government House Leader.

  • In the 2003 Northwest Territories election, Joe Handley was returned by acclamation.

  • Joe Handley was acclaimed Premier of the Northwest Territories by the legislative assembly in December 2003.

  • In August 2007, Joe Handley announced that he would not seek re-election.

  • Floyd Roland became Premier of the Northwest Territories in 2007.
