UV Index

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The UV Index was developed by Environment Canada to alert Canadians to the strength of ultraviolet rays from the sun. The thinning ozone layer increases the risk of ultraviolet rays causing sunburn, skin cancer, skin aging and eye cataracts. The higher the UV Index number, the greater the risk.

The UV Index forecast is included in Environment Canada's text weather forecasts from the middle of April to the end of September.
