Canadian Government User Fees
Commons Committee Recommends Red-tape Commission
The House Finance Committee went beyond looking at just the issue of user fees to apply similar criticism to government regulations in general. It recommends that the federal government set up a red-tape commission to look at existing regulations and decide if they are still needed. The commission could then rewrite regulations to meet current circumstances or get rid of them altogether. A red-tape commission should also set guidelines for implementing further regulations, according to the Finance Committee.
The Committee pointed out that federal regulation is only one part of the burden placed on Canadian business - and that provincial and municipal governments should also be looking at their fee structures.
