Date of the Next Alberta Election

Rather than a fixed election date, Alberta has set a three-month period in which provincial elections are to be held. Beginning in 2012, a general election is to be held between March 1 and May 31 every four years.

The next Alberta provincial election is scheduled to be held between March 1 and May 31, 2016.

The Premier decides on the specific date and asks the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta to dissolve the Legislative Assembly.

Dates of Future Provincial Elections in Alberta

According to the Election Amendment Act, 2011, after the 2012 Alberta provincial election, a general election is to be held between March 1 and May 31 in the fourth year after the most recent election. Again it is up to the Premier to decide on the exact timing of the election.

The Alberta Legislative Assembly could also be dissolved if the government lost a non-confidence vote in the Legislative Assembly triggering an election. This is most unlikely with a majority government, but could happen quite easily in the case of a minority government.

The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta also retains the power to dissolve the Legislative Assembly.
