Edmonton

By Susan Munroe, About.com

Definition: Edmonton is the capital city of the province of Alberta, Canada. Edmonton is located near the centre of Alberta, on the North Saskatchewan River.

The name Edmonton was taken from Fort Edmonton, which was originally located about 20 miles down the North Saskatchewan River. The fort was moved to the site of the current city of Edmonton by the Hudson's Bay Company in the early 1800s. William Tomison, an inland master with the Hudson's Bay Company, is reported to have named the Fort after Edmonton, Middlesex, the birthplace of Sir James Winter Lake, the Hudson's Bay Company's Deputy Governor at the time.
