Iqaluit

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Iqaluit is the capital city of the territory of Nunavut, Canada. Iqaluit is the largest community and also the only city in Nunavut. Iqaluit is located at the head of Frobisher Bay on southern Baffin Island.

Formerly called Frobisher Bay, in 1987 the community's residents changed the name back to its original name Iqaluit, which means "many fish" in Inuktitut. In a referendum in 1995 Iqaluit was chosen to be the capital of the new territory of Nunavut, which came into being in 1999. In 2001 Iqaluit was officially recognized as a city.
