Victoria

By Susan Munroe, About.com

Definition: Victoria is the capital city of the province of British Columbia, Canada. Victoria is located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

The city of Victoria was named after Queen Victoria. The site of Victoria was first chosen on the port of Camosack by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1842 for the location of a new fur trading post to be the company's Pacific headquarters. The trading post was locally called Fort Albert for a while, but was officially named Fort Victoria in 1843. When the townsite was established in 1852, the name Victoria was adopted. Victoria was incorporated as a city in 1862. With the merger of the two British colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia in 1866, Victoria became the colonial capital. Victoria became the provincial capital city in 1871 when British Columbia joined Canadian Confederation.
