Yellowknife

By Susan Munroe, About.com

Definition: Yellowknife is the capital city of the Northwest Territories and its only city. Yellowknife is located on the north shore of Great Slave Lake and is just 512 km (318 miles) south of the Arctic Circle.

The name Yellowknife comes from a Dene band, the Yellowknives, now long gone, who once lived on the islands in the East Arm of Great Slave Lake and carried knives with yellow copper blades.
