Kyoto Protocol

Definition: The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement reached in 1997 in Kyoto, Japan to address the problems of climate change. The Kyoto Protocol commits 38 industrialized countries to cut their greenhouse gas emissions. The Canadian government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002, and has a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to six percent below their 1990 levels by 2012.

The Conservative government elected in early 2006 is examinig alternatives to the Kyoto Protocol and is working on the development of a "made-in-Canada" solution to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
