The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) was established in December 2003, consolidating all border services provided by the Canadian federal government into one agency. The Canada Border Services Agency has the dual purpose of protecting the safety and security of Canadians and at the same time facilitating trade and traffic.

The following Canadian border statistics for the fiscal year ending March 2005 give an idea of the scope of work done by the Canada Border Services Agency at the Canadian border.

Number of travellers processed: over 94.9 million

Number of people denied entry into Canada: 94,024

Number of permanent residents landed: 202,007

Import duties collected: over $3 billion

GST collected: nearly $24.9 billion

Provincial sales taxes collected: $52 million

Number of courier shipments processed: more than 26 million

Missing children recovered in 2004: 74

Weapons seized: 5585 (1069 firearms; 4516 other)

Number of drug seizures: 8591

Currency seized: over $32 million
