What are Returning Officers?

Returning officers are the election officers responsible for the conduct of a Canadian federal election in each federal riding. Returning officers open offices early in a federal election campaign.

When to Contact Your Returning Officer

Contact the office of your local returning officer to

  • add your name to the voters list

  • make changes or corrections to the voters list

  • apply to vote by special ballot

  • find out about voting options if you wish to vote on a day other than election day

  • get useful information about the Canadian federal electoral process and specific services available in your federal riding, for example services for the disabled.

How to Contact Your Returning Officer

The address and telephone number of the office of your local federal returning officer is on the Voter Information Card sent to all registered voters during the federal election campaign.

You can also find information on the office of your local returning officer by looking up your federal riding on the Elections Canada Voter Information Service during a federal election campaign.
