After three minority governments in a row, in 2011 voters gave Canada a majority Conservative government, relieving the country of frequent federal elections for a while. The voter turnout was also up slightly.

The Conservatives under Stephen Harper won a majority government in the 2011 Canadian federal election. The NDP led by Jack Layton made huge gains, including 58 of the 75 seats in Quebec, to become the Official Opposition. Both Michael Ignatieff, the Liberal leader, and Gilles Duceppe, the Bloc Québécois leader, resigned.
The voter turnout was 61.4 percent.

In the 2008 Canadian federal election, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Conservatives won a second minority government.

Fed up with Liberal scandals, voters in the 2006 Canadian federal election gave Stephen Harper and the Conservatives a minority government. The Conservatives picked up 10 seats in Quebec, giving them members of parliament in all regions of Canada.
The voter turnout was 64.7 percent.
2004 Canadian Federal Election Results
Paul Martin and the Liberals won the 2004 Canadian federal election, but this time it was a minority government. In Quebec, the Bloc Québécois picked up seats because of the Liberal sponsorship scandal.
The voter turnout was 60.9 percent.
2000 Canadian Federal Election Results
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien led the Liberals to a third majority government, defeating the new Canadian Alliance Party led by Stockwell Day. The Progressive Conservatives barely hung on to official party status in the House of Commons.
The voter turnout was 64.1 percent.
1997 Canadian Federal Election Results
Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and the Liberals won a second majority government. The Reform Party led by Preston Manning became the official opposition. The NDP led by Alexa McDonough picked up seats, and the Prog;ressive Conservatives under Jean Charest slowly started to climb back from their rout in 1993.
The voter turnout was 67 percent.
