About Alexa McDonough:

Alexa McDonough was leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada from 1995 to 2003. During her years as leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, the federal NDP put a priority on the issues of health care, education, pensions and unemployment. Earlier in her political career, Alexa McDonough was distinguished as the first woman to lead a recognized political party in Canada when she was elected leader of the Nova Scotia NDP in 1980.

Political Career of Alexa McDonough:

  • Alexa McDonough was elected leader of the Nova Scotia NDP in 1980. She remained leader of the Nova Scotia NDP until 1994.

  • Alexa McDonough was rirst elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1981.

  • In 1995, Alexa McDonough was elected leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada.

  • She was rirst elected to the House of Commons in 1997.

  • Alexa McDonough stepped down as the federal NDP leader in January 2003, but remained the NDP member of parliament for Halifax.

  • She was re-elected in the 2004 Canadian federal election and was named NDP critic for foreign affairs and post-secondary education.

  • Alexa McDonough was re-elected in the 2006 Canadian federal election.

  • In June 2006, Alexa McDonough announced that she would not run in the next federal election.
