Rideau Hall

Definition: Rideau Hall in Ottawa is the official residence of the Governor General of Canada. The estate is owned by the National Capital Commission and has a visitors centre and extensive grounds and gardens.

Rideau Hall was built in 1838 for Thomas Mackay, an Ottawa mill owner who helped build the Rideau Canal. The residence was acquired by the Canadian federal government in 1867 and has been enlarged and renovated many times since.
