Sheila Fraser, a Chartered Accountant, was appointed Auditor General of Canada in May 2001. Her role as head of the Office of the Auditor General of Canada is to audit the accuracy of the financial statements of the federal government, to check that the federal government is spending the correct amount of money according to the wishes of Parliament, and also to identify if the federal government is running its programs efficiently and economically.

Sheila Fraser is an Officer of Parliament and reports directly to the House of Commons.
