Warm up to Winter in Canada

Canadian Winter Health, Sports, Car and Driving Tips

By Susan Munroe, About.com Guide

It looks like we're going to have winter in Canada again this year. Here are Canadian resources to help make it through to spring.

Health in Winter

Even if you've had your flu shot, there is a good chance you'll be struck by an errant flu bug in Canada this winter. Health Canada has useful information to help you avoid and survive the flu. Another important Canadian winter health topic is addressed by City of Toronto tips on safe ways to shovel snow.

Winter Sports

Once you have the winter health angles covered, then you can take advantage of a whole new season of Canadian winter sports.

If you just want to watch, take a look at About.com Hockey with Jamie Fitzpatrick. To catch figure skating championships on TV, keep an eye on the TV schedule. Skate Canada also carries a schedule of events and results of figure skating competitions in Canada and around the world.

If you're a skier, check Canada Skis! to find information on ski resorts, weather conditions, equipment, trips, and tips.

Canadian curling enthusiasts can get all the latest news at TSN.ca Curling. If you want to get started in curling, you'll find the rules, clubs, and even the history of the game and a curling glossary at the Canadian Curling Association.

Winter Driving

Before the weather turns bad, make sure your car is ready for Canadian winter road conditions. Winter Driving from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation has information on winter car tune-ups, getting yourself ready, putting together a winter survival kit for your car, and how to drive in all kinds of winter weather. Before you get out on the road, be sure to check the weather forecasts and winter safety precautions for extreme weather conditions too.

Going South for the Winter

Some of you may choose to cope with the Canadian winter by going south to Florida or Arizona. If you're packing your bags, make sure you've worked out the tax implications of spending part of the year in warmer weather.
