member of the house of assembly - MHA

By Susan Munroe, About.com

Definition: One member of the house of assembly (MHA) is elected in each provincial electoral district or constituency in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. MHAs represent the views of constituents in the House of Assembly, and take part in committees and debates on provincial legislation.

Members of provincial and territory legislative assemblies have slightly different titles depending on the province, but their roles are similar.
  • In the territories and most other provinces in Canada, the legislature is called the legislative assembly, and its members are called Members of the Legislative Assembly or MLAs.

  • In Ontario, members of the Ontario Legislative Assembly are called Members of the Provincial Parliament or MPPs.

  • In Quebec, the legislature is the National Assembly, and provincial representatives are called Members of the National Assembly or MNAs.
