Definition: One member of the legislative assembly (MLA) is elected in each provincial and territory electoral district. MLAs represent the views of their constituents in the legislative assembly, and take part in committees and debates on provincial legislation.

Members of provincial and territory legislative assemblies have slightly different titles depending on the province, but their roles are similar.
  • In Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, Members of the House of Assembly are called MHAs,

  • In Ontario, members of the Ontario Legislative Assembly are called Members of the Provincial Parliament or MPPs.

  • In Quebec, the legislature is the National Assembly, and provincial representatives are called Members of the National Assembly or MNAs.
