member of the national assembly - MNA

By Susan Munroe, About.com

Definition: One member is elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in each provincial electoral division in Quebec. MNAs represent the views of their constituents in the National Assembly of Quebec, and take part in committees and debates on provincial legislation.

Members of provincial and territory legislative assemblies have slightly different titles depending on the province, but their roles are similar.
  • In the territories and most other provinces in Canada, the legislature is called the legislative assembly, and its members are called Members of the Legislative Assembly or MLAs.

  • In Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, Members of the House of Assembly are called MHAs.

  • In Ontario, members of the Ontario Legislative Assembly are called Members of the Provincial Parliament or MPPs.
