About Cindy Klassen
Canadian speed skater Cindy Klassen became the first Canadian to win five medals at a single Winter Olympics when she captured a gold, two silver and two bronze medals at the Turin Olympics in 2006. Added to her bronze medal from the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002, the total of six Olympics medals made Cindy Klassen the most decorated Canadian Olympic athlete in history.
Since the Turin Olympics, Cindy Klassen has had two long breaks from competition. In early 2007, her sister was seriously injured in a car accident and Cindy cut her training to be with her. In 2008, Cindy had knee surgery on both knees, which caused her to miss the entire 2008-09 season. She did not return to competition until October 2009, but does plan to compete in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
