The day after the Parliament Buildings fire, parliamentarians started to meet in the Victoria Memorial Museum. The Art Gallery was given just 36 hours to clear its exhibition rooms and stayed closed to the public until 1921 when the new Centre Block was opened. The Art Gallery solved its dilemma in part by developing its exhibition loan programs. Between 1916 and 1921 the Art Gallery sent out 94 exhibitions to cities across Canada, with little damage.
