They advise Canadians to use common sense and caution when handling their mail. Here are practical tips on mail security and recognizing and handling suspicious mail in Canada.

When Not to Open Your Mail

Canada Post warns not to open a letter or parcel if:
  • it is something you would not normally expect
  • there is something unusual about it, such as no return address or a strange smell.

How to Identify Suspicious Mail

Some specific things to watch out for are:
  • a powdery substance on the outside of the mail
  • no return address
  • the return address is from a different place than the postmark
  • misspelled words
  • a strange smell
  • the shape is irregular or lopsided
  • the address is badly typed or written
  • excessive postage

What to Do if You Receive Suspicious Mail

Health Canada advises:
  • if possible, do not open, touch or taste suspicious mail
  • isolate the item by leaving and securing the area
  • wash your hands immediately and carefully
  • alert the police by calling 911
  • seek medical attention if you are concerned
