Canada Post warns not to open a letter or parcel if:- it is something you would not normally expect
- there is something unusual about it, such as no return address or a strange smell.
How to Identify Suspicious Mail
Some specific things to watch out for are:- a powdery substance on the outside of the mail
- no return address
- the return address is from a different place than the postmark
- misspelled words
- a strange smell
- the shape is irregular or lopsided
- the address is badly typed or written
- excessive postage
What to Do if You Receive Suspicious Mail
Health Canada advises:- if possible, do not open, touch or taste suspicious mail
- isolate the item by leaving and securing the area
- wash your hands immediately and carefully
- alert the police by calling 911
- seek medical attention if you are concerned
