Ernest Manning was the longest serving premier of Alberta. Beginning as a radio evangelist, Ernest Manning became a cabinet minister in William Aberhart's Social Credit government. Becoming premier when Aberhart died, Ernest Manning was helped by the discovery of oil at Leduc, which brought a boom to Alberta, and allowed his government to deliver efficient services and keep taxes low. A clean government and control of government growth helped keep Ernest Manning in power for 25 years.

Political Career of Ernest Manning:
- Ernest Manning was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in 1935.
- In 1935 Ernest Manning was appointed Provincial Secretary and Minister of Trade and Industry. He held both posts until 1943.
- After Premier William Aberhart died in 1943, Ernest Manning was elected Leader of the Social Credit Party and became Premier of Alberta. Ernest Manning remained Premier of Alberta for 25 years.
- While he was Premier, Ernest Manning was also Provincial Treasurer from 1944 to 1954, Minister of Mines and Minerals from 1952 to 1962, and Attorney General from 1955 to 1968.
- In 1968, Ernest Manning resigned as Premier of Alberta, and also as the MLA for Strathcona East.
- Ernest Manning was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1970. He retired from the Senate in 1983 after 13 years.
