About John Hamm:

Premier John Hamm, a country doctor for 30 years before he entered Nova Scotia politics, has been a strong advocate for improved health care in Nova Scotia and across Canada. When his Progressive Conservative government was reduced to a minority government in 2003, John Hamm displayed a new-found flexibility and cut deals with the opposition on auto insurance reform and gas price regulation. John Hamm also delivered a lucrative off-shore resources agreement with Ottawa.

  • The Progressive Conservatives won the Nova Scotia provincial general election in 1999, and John Hamm was sworn in as Premier of Nova Scotia.

  • In September 2005, John Hamm announced he would step down as Premier of Nova Scotia as soon as a new leader of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party could be elected at a leadership convention.

  • In 2006 John Hamm was replaced as leader of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party and as Premier of Nova Scotia by Rodney Macdonald.

  • In December 2006 John Hamm was appointed Chairman of Assisted Human Reproduction Canada, a federal regulatory agency charged with overseeing assisted human reproduction in Canada.
